Somatic therapy

Somatic therapy that includes the body in the conversation.

Stress and painful experiences can live in the body as well as the mind. Somatic therapy helps you notice, understand, and gently work with both.

Overview

What somatic therapy is

Somatic therapy is talk therapy that also pays attention to the body. Together with your therapist, you notice sensations, breath, posture, and movement. These cues can show how your nervous system has learned to protect you.

Many people come to it after years of insight that has not changed how they feel. The body can offer another way in.

What we help with

When the body is carrying more than words can hold

Somatic work can support people living with anxiety, the effects of trauma, chronic stress, and grief. It can also help when you feel disconnected from your body, or when tension and exhaustion show up without a clear cause.

Your therapist will always check that a physical symptom has been reviewed by a medical provider. Somatic therapy supports medical care; it does not replace it.

Who this is for

For people who have talked a lot and still feel stuck

Somatic therapy can be a good fit if you understand your patterns but still react in ways you do not choose. It can also help if feelings are hard to name, or if talking about the past feels overwhelming.

No prior experience with yoga, meditation, or movement is needed.

Questions people ask

Questions about somatic therapy

Will I have to move or be touched?
Sessions may include gentle movement, breath, or changes in posture, and you can always decline. Repose therapists do not use touch in sessions. Everything is an invitation, and talking is always part of the work.
Can somatic therapy happen online?
Yes. Many clients do somatic work by video from a private space at home. Your therapist will guide you through the same noticing and grounding practices used in the office.
Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Research on body-based therapies is growing, and approaches such as Somatic Experiencing are informed by what we know about stress physiology. At Repose, somatic work is combined with established approaches like EMDR and cognitive therapies. Your therapist can talk through the research with you.
Do you take insurance?
Repose is in-network with some plans and out-of-network with others. Our Client Care Team can check your benefits during your consultation. See our Insurance and Fees page for details.
